《Hexagonal Vase, decorated with bamboo, plum and tiger design in overglaze enamels》

Edo period, 1670-1700  Porcelain

Red, blue, green, and yellow gleam on the translucent white ground. The motifs include a tiger, Taihu stone, bamboo, plum tree, and a dragon. They are painted with such characteristic Kakiemon delicacy that we can see the tiger’s coat and whiskers and shading on the tree. As porcelain production advanced in Arita, early in the Edo period, overglaze enamel techniques also progressed. The white porcelain body, which makes the motifs even more beautiful, is called nigoshi-de (a reference to the milky liquid from washing rice). The Kakiemon style had matured by the Enpo era (1673-81), from which this work dates.
