Mary CASSATT

《Augusta Reading to Her Daughter》

1910  Oil on canvas

Cassatt’s work is distinctive for her portrayal of intimate scenes in the lives of women and mothers with children in a bright Impressionist style. She continued to perfect that style after showing in the Impressionist exhibitions. This work depicts a mother and child in the verdant garden of the Château de Beaufresne in Le Mesnil-Théribus, on the outskirts of Paris, where Cassatt spent the last years of her life. Having become famous, Cassatt no longer needed to paint friends and family members but hired women and children to model for her.
