《Woman with a Glove》
c.1922 Oil on panel
Gleizes met Cubist artists in 1909 or 1910 and began working in a similar style. In 1912, he formed Section d’Or with others who stressed geometric and other systematic principles in analyzing color and form. This work’s composition integrates complexly intertwined geometric shapes. The subject is initially perplexing, but it is possible to recognize the form of a woman with a large glove: an attempt to treat a por trait of a woman, a traditional subject, in a new manner. Gleizes first addressed this subject in 1920 and continue to develop it in various ways until the 1950s; twenty-five paintings and sketches are extant.
