SAKAMOTO Hanjiro

《Fisherwoman》

1913  Oil on canvas

Sakamoto Hanjiro created this work at thirty-one. The previous year, Natsume Soseki’s rating of his work in the Bunten attracted interest within art circles. In this painting, probably inspired by a trip to the Boso Peninsula, Sakamoto depicts a fisherwoman taking a break after work. The bucket, net, dipper, pine branch, kiseru pipe are skillfully arranged to form circles and straight lines, with thought given to the rhythm and balance of their forms. In such early works, he used an Impressionist style, with separate brushstrokes. This painting was his last at the Bunten, since he helped organize, the following year, the Nikakai, which rejected the official exhibitions.
