FUJISHIMA Takeji

《Distant View from Yashima》

1932  Oil on canvas

Fujishima Takeji, with a commission from the National Park Association of Japan, spent a month one summer gathering material on Yashima in the Inland Sea. Yashima is small, upland peninsula stretching due north, northwest of Takamatsu in Kagawa province. At dawn, facing due east, Fujishima would paint the sun rising over the Gokenzan peaks across the inlet that was the site of the Battle of Dannoura. After breakfast, lunch, and a rest, he painted Shido Bay and Megishima Island. In this afternoon painting, he simplified the picture plane, eliminating unneeded islands, to present the setting sun gradually changing the colors of the sky, the sea, and Megishima.
