Rouault, the son of a cabinetmaker, was apprenticed to a maker of stained glass. The banks of the Seine in Paris and its suburbs were his most familiar scenes. The setting for this painting is probably Belleville, a working-class area in Paris’s 19th arrondissement. Rouault said, “I painted a poor parent and children in a rundown district.” The three figures standing in the street, under the light of the full moon, are a parent and children or Christ and his disciples, living in the present, or perhaps a vision bringing the existence of Christ closer to one. Rouault’s skillful use of chiaroscuro intensifies the sense of desolation.
