Henri MATISSE

《Woman with Blue Bodice》

1935  Oil on canvas

In the 1930s, exploring planar color constructions, increasingly simplified his paintings. In this work, he skillfully places three colors, red, blue, and yellow, outlined in black. The shoulders of the woman seated in a chair are greatly exaggerated, and her hips are expressed as extremely narrow. Three photographs capturing this work in process are extant; from them, we know the process by which, in less than three weeks, it became gradually simplified. His model is a Russian named Lydia Delectorskaya, who worked as his model and assistant from 1934 on and also cared for Matisse’s ailing wife.
