Fujishima Takeji went to Europe when was thirty-eight, studying there for four years. He spent the last two years in Rome. The goal of his studies was mastering decorative painting. One of the required skills was painting the human figure, for which his instructor Carolus-Duran was famed as a portrait painter. Fujishima produced many free, relaxed paintings of women while in Rome; of them, this is a masterwork. His model, with her distinctive scarf, is a flower vendor from Ciociaria, a region southeast of Rome.
